Part way thru the major shed season ( Blue crab shedding) the southern marsh of Dorchester County comes alive for the summer. School rock, speckle trout, croakers, white perch and spot all make their summer appearances and offer great table or just fun plain ole catch and release fun.

Jason took his daughter and wife out along some smaller marsh river systems to par take in the tidal bounties. There is something for every type of fisherman out there whether its bait fishing with peelers for a dinner or casting artificials in shallows for a pic and C&R all you need to do is GET OUT THERE and try and take a kid if the opportunity is there.

Just like the yellow perch the white perch make their spawning runs into the fresh waters of our Chesapeake tributaries. Another Chesapeake Pursuit.
Even with the unstable weather pattern MD has been dealing with the white perch have been trying to make a run. Been very hit or miss but when its happening we've been into citation sized white perch. 5 year old Brooke caught her first citation fish a healthy fat perch.

When fishing bigger bodies of structureless waters we switch from artificial to bai
t.

J.O.'s Southern Style fish fry batter was used to season the fish and this is an outstanding batter!

Not just to boast pictures but in the hopes of being helpful here is a weekend report from 3/2 .
Jason took his 5 year old daughter Brooke out for some light tackle fun. We boarded with good friend Al Heinken and his son Ryan. Its a once a year venture we take with the kids on MD's upper tidal river systems.

Saturday found us at the end of the in coming tide and leaving on the outfgoing. True to form the slack was our least productive. We caught Yellow perch on a variety of 1/8 to 1/4 jigs. Brooke caught her first fish on a lure saturday and it happened to be the first fish of the day a keeper yellow on a 1/8 oz black/chart 1" jig body tipped with minnow.  Way to start the day.
We ended up with a nice mixed bag of crappie and yellows for the day all using the same structure.. Add in a Large mouth and solid pickerel. This type fishing I love it requires some finesse and and finding a pattern. I found todays pattern was deep and slow but close structure on a moving tide.
It's always nice, no great, to spend a day on the water with family and friends. Being a successful day was just icing on the cake. The day ended with some scenic snow showers on the upper Choptank and a bonus pickerel.

As most of you know Chesapeake Pursuits is about just that. The pursuits of all things Chesapeake and when hunting falls off its time right away to prepare for the spring treasures of our area. Mid to late Feb we usually expect to see our first yellows showing up on the spawning runs thru the Chesapeake tributaries.

Right on time for a much needed fish fry Jason, Larry and Brooke landed some eating fish. Fish were caught on channel ledges using a mixture of 1/8 oz shad darts and minnows.
We used a batter that included egg,
JO's seasoning, flour ,salt and pepper.. Deep fried to a crispy taste of heaven. If your heading out good luck! And pick up some JO's fish seasoning.. its a must here!
